SUMMARY:Green Crabs in Netarts Bay: Challenges and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Cracking the code on green crabs; discover how these crabs are impacting local estuarine and marine species. \nJoin Friends of Netarts Bay Watershed\, Estuary\, Beach and Sea (WEBS) and visiting scientist Dr. Sylvia Yamada at this informative presentation to learn how the green crab range expansion is impacting Netarts Bay.   \nThese small but voracious crabs disrupt ecosystems by preying on shellfish and tearing up the eelgrass. They were first introduced to the West Coast via San Francisco Bay in the 1980s. They have since spread throughout estuaries and bays in California\, Oregon\, and Washington; recently reaching as far north as Alaska.  Their high tolerance for a wide range of temperatures and salinity has allowed them to become a global challenge.   \nSo how concerned should we be?  Marina Dreeben\, WEBS Stewardship Coordinator invites you to “join us in-person or virtually to learn about the current status of green crabs in Netarts Bay and the proposed strategies to address their impacts.”  She goes on to say\, “Native shellfish\, along with countless other species\, are under threat due to the presence of green crabs.” \nAnd what can we do about it? Join the conversation as we tackle these questions with expert visiting scientist\, Dr. Sylvia Yamada. With degrees from the University of British Columbia and the University of Oregon\, she is a leading voice on the green crab invasion in the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Yamada has worked in salmon research for Fisheries and Oceans Canada and taught at Woods Hole Marine Biological Lab\, Wellesley College\, the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. Her research interests include predator-prey interactions\, the management of invertebrate fisheries\, and the impact of introduced species on native communities. She has been following the green crab range expansion since 1998. \nRegistration is required. Select in-person or virtual ticket(s) when registering. For virtual tickets\, the Zoom link will be shared after registration. \nTo register and read more about this event\, visit www.netartsbaywebs.org/events \nQuestions or Cancelations? Contact info@netartsbaywebs.org \nIf you register and your plans change making you unable to attend\, please let us know so that we can offer your spot to someone else. We want to ensure that as many people are able to enjoy this event as we have space for. \nConsider donating:   \nFriends of Netarts Bay WEBS is committed to offering high-quality\, nature-based events led by experts\, while also reducing the financial barrier of outdoor recreation. We do this by offering our events and programs at no cost to participants.  \nYour donation helps in supporting the work of our organization. Every little bit helps!  All of our workshops\, classes\, and events are free. As a non-profit organization\, we rely on donations and grants to keep us going\, and growing.   \nIf you would like to donate\, please visit our website. \nStay social with Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS online @netartsbaywebs

SUMMARY:Netarts/Oceanside Earth Day Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Netarts/Oceanside Earth Day Cleanup \nCelebrate Earth Day on Saturday\, April 19th with the Friends of Netarts Bay Watershed\, Estuary\, Beach\, and Sea (WEBS) by joining us in a beach cleanup from Cape Lookout State Park to Cape Meares and Bayocean Spit.  \nWinter always brings an influx of marine debris\, with storms washing up harmful trash that poses a threat to wildlife and our unique coastal ecosystems. Springtime offers the perfect opportunity for us to unite as a community and restore our beaches. WEBS has been hosting cleanups for decades with SOLVE\, an environmental non-profit that evolved from a grassroots initiative into a national model for volunteer environmental stewardship and other local partners. The result of these partnerships makes a positive impact on the health of Netarts Bay and the surrounding areas. “Clean up the beach with friends or family\, or expand your community by teaming up with fellow volunteers. Volunteers of all ages will find the beach cleanup fun\, educational\, and rewarding.” shares Marina Dreeben\, WEBS Stewardship Coordinator. “Thanks to the amazing crew at The Schooner Restaurant and Lounge\, we will kick off this year’s event with warm drinks and snacks on their deck.” \nAs you head out to clean up or just explore\, it is important to remember that ocean shores can be dangerous. Avoid logs in the water\, keep your distance from marine mammals\, and never turn your back on the ocean! If you find any hazardous material\, please alert a staff member.  \nAdvanced registration saves time but is not required. To register and read more about this event visit http://www.netartsbaywebs.org/events  \nQuestions?  \nContact info@netartsbaywebs.org \nConsider donating:   \nFriends of Netarts Bay WEBS is committed to offering high-quality\, nature-based events led by experts\, while also reducing the financial barrier of outdoor recreation.

SUMMARY:Oregon Humanities Conversation Project: What Matters at Life’s End with Wendy Usher
DESCRIPTION:Many of us know we should talk about what matters at the end of our lives\, but we don’t always know where or how to start these conversations. Once people start exploring death and dying\, they often realize it’s not so scary to talk about after all. It can be comforting and empowering to know more about your options and consider what would be helpful for those who may be making decisions on your behalf. Who do you want with you when you are dying? What environments feel most comfortable? Do you have a preference for what happens to your body and your possessions after you die? How do you want to be remembered? This conversation provides a space and dedicated time for reflecting and exploring your end-of-life wishes.
