SUMMARY:Green Crabs in Netarts Bay: Challenges and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Cracking the code on green crabs; discover how these crabs are impacting local estuarine and marine species. \nJoin Friends of Netarts Bay Watershed\, Estuary\, Beach and Sea (WEBS) and visiting scientist Dr. Sylvia Yamada at this informative presentation to learn how the green crab range expansion is impacting Netarts Bay.   \nThese small but voracious crabs disrupt ecosystems by preying on shellfish and tearing up the eelgrass. They were first introduced to the West Coast via San Francisco Bay in the 1980s. They have since spread throughout estuaries and bays in California\, Oregon\, and Washington; recently reaching as far north as Alaska.  Their high tolerance for a wide range of temperatures and salinity has allowed them to become a global challenge.   \nSo how concerned should we be?  Marina Dreeben\, WEBS Stewardship Coordinator invites you to “join us in-person or virtually to learn about the current status of green crabs in Netarts Bay and the proposed strategies to address their impacts.”  She goes on to say\, “Native shellfish\, along with countless other species\, are under threat due to the presence of green crabs.” \nAnd what can we do about it? Join the conversation as we tackle these questions with expert visiting scientist\, Dr. Sylvia Yamada. With degrees from the University of British Columbia and the University of Oregon\, she is a leading voice on the green crab invasion in the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Yamada has worked in salmon research for Fisheries and Oceans Canada and taught at Woods Hole Marine Biological Lab\, Wellesley College\, the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. Her research interests include predator-prey interactions\, the management of invertebrate fisheries\, and the impact of introduced species on native communities. She has been following the green crab range expansion since 1998. \nRegistration is required. Select in-person or virtual ticket(s) when registering. For virtual tickets\, the Zoom link will be shared after registration. \nTo register and read more about this event\, visit www.netartsbaywebs.org/events \nQuestions or Cancelations? Contact info@netartsbaywebs.org \nIf you register and your plans change making you unable to attend\, please let us know so that we can offer your spot to someone else. We want to ensure that as many people are able to enjoy this event as we have space for. \nConsider donating:   \nFriends of Netarts Bay WEBS is committed to offering high-quality\, nature-based events led by experts\, while also reducing the financial barrier of outdoor recreation. We do this by offering our events and programs at no cost to participants.  \nYour donation helps in supporting the work of our organization. Every little bit helps!  All of our workshops\, classes\, and events are free. As a non-profit organization\, we rely on donations and grants to keep us going\, and growing.   \nIf you would like to donate\, please visit our website. \nStay social with Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS online @netartsbaywebs

SUMMARY:Rockfish And The Changing Ocean
DESCRIPTION:  \nROCKFISH AND THE CHANGING OCEAN \nSaturday\, October 19th\, 10 am – 12 pm  \nJoin us for an enlightening event\, “Rockfish and the Changing Ocean\,” where we will dive into the fascinating world of rockfish and the evolving marine ecosystem off the Oregon coast. \nThe visiting scientist offering this presentation is Dr. Leif Rasmuson\, the Marine Fishery Research Project Leader for Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. \nIn 2021\, Dr. Rasmuson and his team conducted a groundbreaking survey using acoustics and underwater video\, spanning the entire Oregon coastline for the first time in state history. This innovative research not only helped prevent drastic cuts to rockfish fisheries but also shed light on critical issues like hypoxia in nearshore waters. This research will be continued with a follow-up survey in 2025. \nAdditionally\, Dr. Rasmuson will present about various rockfish projects currently underway in Oregon’s oceans. We’ll discuss the intriguing movements of Yelloweye rockfish\, the behaviors of Deacon rockfish\, and the concerning lack of older female Black\, Yellowtail\, and Canary rockfish. \nWhether you’re a marine enthusiast\, a fisherman\, or simply curious to learn more about our ocean’s health\, this event promises to provide valuable insights into the resilience and challenges of Oregon’s rockfish populations. Join us for an engaging discussion and a chance to learn more about Oregon’s first statewide black rockfish survey\, and how it contributed to the 2023 rockfish population estimate. \nMeeting Location: Register for details. \nRegistration Required: Get more information and find a link to register on our website at: https://www.netartsbaywebs.org/events \nCost: There is no cost to attend this program. Donations are appreciated. \nQuestions or Cancelations? Contact info@netartsbaywebs.org \nSpace will be limited and this event will fill up quickly. We want to ensure that as many people are able to enjoy this presentation as we have space for.
